Nació en la ciudad de Oxford, Mississippi, graduado enla Universidad de Virginia.

Presidente fundador y del comité que representa en neurocirugía la Sociedad Americana para Pruebas y Materiales (ASTM) para consensuar los implantes del sistema nervioso.

Es diseñador e inventor del [[clip|clip]] de aneurisma McFadden, el reposacabezastridimensional, y la abrazadera.

Es presidente emérito y profesor de Neurocirugía, Escuela de Medicina de Virginia Oriental, y ex miembro del grupo consultivo sobre los dispositivos de neurología y neurocirugía y medicamentos a la FDA.
